The short version: some links on this site earn us a commission if you book through them, at no extra cost to you. Pages carrying those links say so above the first one.

What that means in practice

WickedStrange participates in affiliate programs run by tour and travel booking platforms and retailers. When you click one of those links and book or buy, we may receive a commission from the merchant. The price you pay is the same either way.

Affiliate links on this site are marked with rel="sponsored" in the page source, which is the standard signal to search engines that a link is commercial. We route every one of them through a single component so that none get missed.

What it doesn’t change

We rank things on whether they’re good. Several tours and properties we recommend have no affiliate program at all, and we link to them anyway — those links carry no commission and are marked as ordinary outbound links.

We also say when something isn’t worth it, when a venue hasn’t published its dates, and when a well-known ghost story doesn’t survive contact with the record. None of that is good for conversion. It’s the reason to read us.

When our link costs you more

Booking platforms add a margin, so the price through an affiliate link is often higher than booking with the operator directly. We pull live prices from those platforms and compare them against what the operator publishes on its own site.

Where booking direct is cheaper, we say so on the page and link you to the operator instead — even though we earn nothing on that click. You may still prefer the platform for its cancellation terms or because you are already a customer. That is a fair trade to make knowingly, and an unfair one to make without being told.

Display advertising

Some pages carry display advertising. Ads are served by a third-party advertising network and may use cookies to serve relevant advertising. See our privacy policy for details on what that involves and how to opt out.

We don’t place ads above the fold on pages where the useful thing is a booking link — the ad would be in the way, and the reader came for the comparison.
