Salem Ghost Tours: Which One Is Actually Worth It in 2026

Salem in October is not a town, it's a queue. A million-odd visitors funnel through a downtown you can cross in fifteen minutes, and a good half of them are looking for the same thing: someone to walk them past a dark building and tell them what happened there.

The tours are genuinely worth doing. But they are not interchangeable, they range from $22 to $35, and the difference between the right one and the wrong one is mostly about who you're bringing and how much theatre you can stand.

The tours, compared

Two things that table won't tell you.

"From $29.99" is a starting price, not a price. Several operators run dynamic pricing that climbs through October. The figures above were checked on July 31, 2026 — expect the same tours to cost more the closer you book to Halloween.

Not every operator publishes a schedule. Ghost City Tours and Black Cat both post their seasons plainly. Salem Historical Tours and Spellbound don't put start times or an operating season on the pages we could reach, which is why those cells read "not published" rather than a number we made up. Which one to pick

Bringing kids? Ghosts of Salem or the Spellbound Tour. Both are all-ages. Salem Historical Tours is the best value for a family — children 6-12 pay $20, under-6s are free, and the senior and student rate of $26.50 also covers military, teachers, nurses, and Salem residents, which is a wider net than anyone else casts.

Want the cheapest ticket? Black Cat's late-night adults-only tour at $22, if you can make a 10pm start on the right night. Their standard 8pm tour at $25 is the cheapest thing running on an ordinary evening.

Want the grimmest version? Requiem for Salem, 16+, meeting in the Old Burying Point rather than outside Old Town Hall. It costs the most and it's the least apologetic about it.

Want history over ghosts? Salem Historical Tours has been running since 1997 and it shows — the guides are historians who happen to be telling ghost stories, rather than the reverse.

What they'll tell you, and what's actually true

This is where a Salem ghost tour earns or loses your respect, so here's the ledger before you go.

Nobody was burned at the stake in Salem. Nineteen people were hanged in 1692. Giles Corey was pressed to death under stones for refusing to plead. Several more died in jail awaiting trial. The burnings belong to continental Europe, and any guide who says otherwise is working from a film.

They were not hanged on Gallows Hill, exactly. The actual execution site was identified by researchers in 2016 as Proctor's Ledge, a modest rocky outcrop below the hill proper, now a small memorial off Pope Street. It is nowhere near as dramatic as the name suggests, which may be why some tours skip it.

The Old Burying Point is real, and old — but the accused aren't in it. Charter Street's burying ground dates to 1637 and is the resting place of, among others, Judge John Hathorne, who sent people to the gallows and never recanted. The executed were denied consecrated burial; families retrieved what they could, quietly, and the graves are unmarked. The Witch Trials Memorial beside the cemetery was dedicated in 1992, three hundred years on.

Hawthorne added the "w" to his name. Nathaniel Hawthorne was Judge Hathorne's great-great-grandson and spent a career writing around that fact. That one is true, and it's the best story on most of these tours.

None of this makes the tours worse. Salem's real history is stranger and considerably darker than the merch on Essex Street suggests, and the good guides know it.

Going in October: the logistics nobody mentions

Book the tour before you book anything else. Evening slots on October weekends go first.

Do not drive in. Downtown parking in October is a contact sport. The Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line from Boston's North Station drops you a ten-minute walk from Essex Street, and in October the ferry from Boston Long Wharf runs too.

Dress for a coastal evening, not for the afternoon. These are 90-minute outdoor walking tours and Salem is on the water. October evenings on the North Shore are colder and windier than the day suggests.

Tours run rain or shine, and refunds are rare. Salem Historical Tours states it plainly: rain or shine, no refund. Assume the same everywhere and bring a hood, not an umbrella you'll be holding for an hour and a half.

The honest recommendation

If you want one tour and you're over sixteen, take Requiem for Salem — it's the most atmospheric, and the Old Burying Point at night is the single best place in the city to hear this story told.

If you're bringing a family, take Haunted Footsteps — best value, longest track record, and the guides treat 1692 as history rather than a haunted house.

If you're on a budget or booking late, Black Cat's 8pm tour at $25 is the strongest cheap ticket in Salem.
