Family-Friendly Halloween in New England 2026: Not-Too-Scary Options

Halloween attractions in New England that won't terrify a six-year-old — with the ones that have actually confirmed their 2026 dates marked, and the age limits that catch people out.

Updated August 21, 2026

The Halloween problem with small children is that most of the season is built for people who want to be frightened, and a six-year-old does not.

Worse, the age guidance is inconsistent and often buried. Some attractions publish a hard minimum, some publish a rating, and some say nothing until you are at the ticket window with a crying child.

This page is the not-too-scary tier: what exists, what has actually confirmed dates, and where the age limits bite.

The four you can actually book

Collins Farm corn maze, Bath NH — open right now. A published season of July 31 through October 31, thirteen acres with three difficulty levels so you can pick a twenty-minute route instead of the ninety-minute one. Flat, level trails. All ages. Leashed dogs welcome. Concessions including fried dough.

One warning: after dark in October the same farm runs a Flashlight Maze and a Haunted Flashlight Maze. Different event, different proposition entirely. Go in daylight.

Ghosts on the Banke, Portsmouth NH — October 16–17 and 23–24. The best small-child Halloween event in New England, and it isn't close. Strawbery Banke designs it explicitly for ages 4 to 8 and calls it "spooky, not scary". Arrival at 5pm or 6pm, finishes at 8pm. $17 public, $16 early bird, $8.50 or free for members, under-1s free. Costumes encouraged.

It's trick-or-treating through genuine eighteenth-century houses, which beats any built set in the region. Four evenings only, with timed arrivals, in a city that fills up in October — book it.

Frightful Scavenger Haunt at Fort Knox, Prospect ME — October 17. A hunt through the passages of a Civil War granite fort. The fort is the attraction; it's enormous and dark and full of staircases that go nowhere, and none of that requires an actor jumping out.

Ghosts of Fort Knox guided tours — August 8 and October 10. Worth noting the August date: a ghost tour with no queue, no crowd, and warm weather, which for a family is a materially different experience from late October.

The farms, now that they've announced

Sherman Farm's Maize, East Conway NH — a White Mountains institution, new theme every year, repeatedly voted the state's best. Its 2026 calendar is published: weekends from September 19 to October 25, 11am to 5pm, $15 per person rising to $18 on the peak October weekends, age 2 and under free.

Coppal House Farm, Lee NH, runs September 12 to October 31, Thursday through Monday, at $8–10 — the cheapest confirmed Halloween-season admission anywhere in this guide. Moulton Farm, Meredith NH, opens September 19 but has not set a closing date or a price.

Farms announce as the corn comes up, and all three of these moved during August.

Where the age limits actually bite

This is the part worth reading before you buy anything.

Ghosts & Gravestones in Boston is rated PG-13 and the operator states plainly it is not suitable for young children — which surprises people, because a trolley sounds gentle. It isn't marketed at families.

The big haunts are not family attractions. Fright Kingdom in Nashua and Barrett's Haunted Mansion in Abington are intense by design. Barrett's runs 18+ special events with signed waivers. Neither is a "maybe they'll cope" proposition.

Ghost tours split cleanly. Ghost City Tours runs all-ages tours in Salem and Boston, and Salem Historical Tours discounts children 6–12 with under-6s free. But the same companies also run 16+ and 21+ tours from nearby meeting points at similar times — check which one you're booking.

If your group wants the opposite end of the scale, the scariest-in-New-England ranking is the other list.

Canobie Lake's Screeemfest sits in the middle: six haunted houses inside a working amusement park, with rides and family areas alongside. Its 2026 dates aren't published yet. Note the park bans costumes and makeup for guests, which catches families out every year.

The honest recommendation

Under 8: Ghosts on the Banke, then a daytime corn maze. That's the whole list, and it's a good one.

8 to 12: add the Fort Knox events and an all-ages ghost tour. Kids at this age generally handle atmosphere well and jump scares badly, which is exactly the line those events sit on.

Teenagers: they want the thing you're trying to avoid. Fright Kingdom has published its full season and opens September 25.

We re-check these as venues announce and re-stamp the date at the top. Tell us if you spot dates before we do.

The Haunted Almanac

We check all 50 New England haunted attractions against their own websites, every week. 25 have published 2026 dates so far. Last sweep: September 15.

The ones that matter never announce. Spooky World published twenty-three nights and put them nowhere but its ticket widget; Scary Acres rebuilt its whole site in nine days without a word. We find those and send them to you. Free, and one click gets you out.
